Change Your Space to Change Your Habits
When I lived in Bangalore, my home was just a post-work crash pad. Bed, mattress, cushions, bean bag, done. What happened? My entire after-work life collapsed into that bed—eating, working, Netflix binges. My posture went to hell, my energy levels tanked, and I became a bed potato.
Fast forward to Dharamshala (after being spoiled by some thoughtful Airbnbs in Goa and McLeod)—I finally got it. Space matters.
We set up our space from scratch mindfully. Carpets, proper sofas, actual desks, ergonomic chairs. Deliberately NO bean bags (your spine will thank you) and NO overbed tables.
The result? Work happens at the desk. Sleep happens in bedrooms. Dining and socialising happen in living spaces.
Here's the process:
Understand what function you want each space to foster, then design accordingly.
Create barriers that make the behaviours you DON'T want inconvenient.
No TV in the bedroom = better sleep. No overbed table = can't work comfortably from bed. Proper desk setup = your back and neck will love you back.
Your space is programming your behaviour every day. Maybe it's time to rewrite that code.
